1.9 DG Solex carb won't idle .GRRRRR

Post by shakeystu »

Hello All, Here's the story, the last time i used the van water got into the fuel system and wouldn't restart when I went back to it a couple of weeks later. I have drained and renewed the fuel and emptied the filter and got the van running , however now it won't tick over. I've taken it for a good thrash , no difference, and tried various adjustments. Idle speed adjusting screw makes no difference, fast idle and throttle damper screws both tweeked to no avail(roughly reset to original position).
I have 12v at the Bypass cut-off solenoid but cannot hear it clicking when I disconnect it. Does the solenoid totally disconnect the flow of fuel to the carb? Haynes quotes it "Interrupts the idle mixture circuit" which suggests that it only affects tick-over.Am I correct on that?
Or is it that water/dirt is still present in the carb and a strip down and cleanout is required?
Your thoughts/knowledge greatly appreciated.
I'm leaning toward the latter problem as the odds are higher for 2 problems to appear simultaniously, aren't they?
Unless water has corroded the solenoid and seized in closed position!
If people looked after the things I wanted to buy, I couldn't afford them.

Solex carb? ...are you sure it's not a pierburg that was a standard fit to a DG.

re your problem
yes there will be or should be an audible click when the cut off valve is disconnected with the ignition on.
and yes again it's only function is to stop the idle.

I had water ingress and it messed everything up.
my problem was the transfer jet being blocked with rust bits, kept stalling when you accelerated.
Eventually I had it properly cleaned and the problem vanished

WHS ^^^

Carb strip, you will have to remove the brass jet at the bottom of the filter bowl and jet it with compressed air

Dont use wire to clean.

This is why I fit a good quality filter between the pump and the carb, good visual check

Cordialement,

:ok

Hi thanks for the replies,
Yep i'm sure it's a Solex, not sure about the DG though, might be DF!!
I couldn't hear a click from solenoid but after talking to an ole school mechanic he reckoned it totally cut the fuel off,(mmm conflicting reports) so think it's still ok.I'll check tomorrow by disconnecting when running and maybe remove ,but looks a bit corroded at flange.
Me thinks a strip down is in order if solonoid ok, top of fuel pump had some crud in it too.
£33 for the gasket set from Brickwerks! Bums
Cheers again for prompt replies

You'll only need to replace the paper gasket during the strip down I should think and chances are it'll be ok anyway. I keep a sheet of gasket paper for jobs like that just in case. I think some old-school places still sell it.

Braw the Bus is a goer again. The solenoid was sticking, removed it and energised a few times and replaced. Then re-tuned after all the faffing about before. Sweet, will still strip carb to clean when the weather is a touch warmer.
