Fitting a 1.6TD JX (now with pics)

Hi all, I have a few questions about fitting a 1.6TD JX engine that I may be buying. If anyone can provide any advice/tips etc. I would be most grateful. Please feel free to make it as simple as possible!! (I am only a McDonalds Manager and, therefore, only good at flipping burgers

First of all will such engine easily fit in my panel van that a presume started life as a 1.6 diesel?

I do have the gearbox and bell housing but nothing else (the engine in question will have sump, exhaust manifold and tinware) Will it just bolt in and wire up and I will be off?

I have heard my wiring loom may not be correct with not originally being a turbo vehicle?

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction or give me an idiots guide to fitting this engine?

Have you got engine mounts and all the water hoses?

What do you mean by tinware?

Has the engine got all the manifolds, filters and turbo?

Im not aware of an idiots guide....

The JX is a good engine new - how many miles has it done?

Mounts- I think so. Water hoses- not sure, I will ask the current owner of the engine. Should they come with?
Tinware- just me trying to be clever. I am told it has alternator/starter.
Manifolds- Exhaust manifold yes, what others do I need and I will check?
Filters- again not sure but I think so, but will ask. (air/fuel)
Turbo- Yes.
Just asked about the mileage now.
Idiots guide- just a figure of speech I think!

Yeah will do, working a fair bit but il nip to the van next day or so.

hi..

its my engine from my 1989 westy which has now had a tdi fitted.

no hoses...they are with my van
no tinware...its watercooled.
no exhaust manifold...its with my van
inlet manifold yes
turbo ...yes
sump ..no its in my van
mounts...my van
no air filter box...its just an engine
oil filter !!!...yes.
fuel filter...its in my van.




it was a good solid reliable honest engine when removed in late november....but it is 20 odd years old.

i do have a diesel input shaft to throw in...

So there we are!

Water hoses? Are they what run under the length of the van, down the middle? I have those if that's what they are.

Filters must be easy and cheap to come by? My knowledge of those is ok.

Just need the sump and exhaust manifold off Keith's mate.

Oh and I have only 1 engine bar, due to the pesky previous owner not giving it me when I bought the van. Still trying to chase him for it now.

sent you a PM with a link to someone selling all the bits (spannerboy on BY)...it was the 6th of Dec though.

my mate may have a sump...but no engine bars.

Do you have the engine mounts? They sit off the bars and attach to the engine.

The air filter is more expensive than you would think - depending how you set it up. I initially used a K&N cone filter with some air ducting pipe and stuck that in behind the indicator cluster. However, that was a tad noisy so i changed it to the standard setup.

Its easier to go the none turbo route, but if you have the time and money then its worth it i think.

I'd make a list of all the items you need and price the whole job up. It soon adds up. For example i had to spend £50 on silicon to join the turbo to the inlet manifold - you will need that too (although i have a pipe that will fit a standard JX setup you can have).

Again not sure about the mounts, I have seen them on ebay so I know what they look like. The more I think about it the more wazzed off I get that the previous owner removed them from the van when I bought it.

Not had chance to take a pic yet. Bloody work, wish I did cars/engines etc for a living!

I am glad I have started looking/learning about engines now as there's obviously a lot to take in. Although I am enjoying it all the same!

Hmmm - i hope someone else can help who has a better memory than me - or better still why dont you go and see a diesel engine.

Looks like you are missing:
Starter motor?
Engine mounts
Rubber mounts between engine bars and engine mounts

Im not quite sure about the water hoses - the angle of the photo doesnt give me the highest confidence that you have them all.

your van is obviously an early van

this means chances are the jx you but ifit comes with wiring will need so mods to make it fit.

you will prob find the jx has more wires than you do with your van-

the jx has a much more complicated cooling system than non turbo motors - designed to help cooling problems - in the long term for relability you need all the jx stuff including the auxwater pump

you will also need ALL the jx inlet / airfilter stuff in cluding air filter housing the JX is different to the N/A stuff

you also need to check your gear box code as even with the jx in place 50mph maybe the max you van will be able to safely do due to the low gearing of a N/A diesel box.


make sure the new engine has a clutch which will save money
you will need bell housing bolts

JX fuel lines are thicker than the non turbo lines so ideeally you need these as well

dontforget the new engine will need a cambelt / tensioner / oil&& filter change ect

you may find all your existing engine bay water hoses do not match the jx housings so ideally you need the full JX set up- a running van that you take all from the engine bay will be simplest in the long run - it may seem more expensive to begin with but in the long term it will be simplest / cheapest and quickest

Ok.... so the bits I require are certainly adding up!! Is there anything there I will struggle to get?

I am not in any rush to get it running so I suppose I am going to need these bits no matter what engine I fit?

Is there a quicker/easier/cheaper way round getting my van running? i.e. buy a rusty van with everything in and transfer over?

How can I find out about the gearbox code?
