Knocking problem

Post by serenitycamper »

Hey guys,

As a few of you know I have the 1.9 1Y engine in my bus with the 1.6 gearbox. On the way home last night it started to make a strange knocking sound from the rear, tonight it is MUCH worse. Now it only happens when under power, a lot less when turning to the right, and not at all when decellerating or coasting. I'm thinking gearbox may be had it.

It sounds like something driveshafty hitting part of the chassis, but it cant be as i've been under it today waggling and shaking etc. Nothing is loose. Oh and its definately not a bearing either.

So any help on this would be great!

hello,

that sounds like cv joints to me - have you waggled them about to see how much play there is, and moved them from side to side to see if a bit more grease will quiet them a bit?

I've waggled everything. The drive shafts move in and out of the box quite a bit but I guess that's normal. There's no play in the joints though, not anywhere near enough to cause this banging, it's a proper bang bang bang bang.

The van seems to lurch with every knock too, I don't know what it is but something is catching and I could really do with some help. Don't know these vans well enough to even guess what this could be. I'll try to record the sound while I'm driving tonorrow to show u guys.

It's getting a bit too scary to drive with confidence now but it's my only vehicle so I don't have a choice :|

remember you engine is a lot stronger than your puny efforts to move the shaft.
Have you checked ALL the CV bolts for tightness?
