coil

Post by c.foster »

hi everyone, a few months ago i had recon engine fitted it drove home like a dream then a few day's later i went to start it and nothing, i checked the wiring etc all seemed ok so i checked the coil found it to be knackered.I ordered another from bosch/lucas put it on a couple of day's later and started fine so me and the wife took it for another run then it just stopped, i phoned the AA they came out and found the fault straight away it was the coil again. Has anybody got any ideas why this is happening any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Hope you all have a happy new year
Thanks again c.foster

Hello,

Some engine details would be useful.

Do you have conventional (points) or electromechanical ignition (Hall effect)

The two require different coils, (conventional 1.5 ohm resistance,

Fit the wrong one on a EM ignition and it will pop.

Hi, its a 1.9dg and it has a hall sender. Does this type have a resister to bring the current down to 8v or is it a 12v, would the ignition control unit have anything to do with the problem as well as this has got me baffled. any help will be greatly appreciated. c.foster

So was the correct coil fitted after the first stopped working?

when you "tested " the first, how did you do that and what did you find?

I tested the primary and secondary winding resistance with a multimeter.
On the primary resistance i got a reading of 0ohms and on the secondary resistance i got a ready of 4.45ohms. I was told that there sould be a reading on both as in the manual so you can check the range. When i put on the new coil it started and went great for about 50miles then the engine went dead the coil was a little hot so i let it cool down then tried again to start but nothing. after i got it home i check all the wiring first because i put on the new coil but found nothing out of place so then checked the coil and found it had the same readings as the first one, i brought this one from bosch/lucas and they matched it to the origional one its an intermotor 11480 electronic ignition coil what fits audi/vw.
Thanks for the replys c.foster

Hello,

Go to your friendly breakers and get yourself a s/hand coil out of polo golf skoda with fuel injection.

These are coils for a transistorised ignition.

Should work.

By the way, a conventional system, SVDA dizzy etc, will cost you less than the cost of the hall sender when it finally gives up the ghost.

Re timing will be necessary, but is not difficult as you will see from these 2 little videos:

and

Hope these will help.

Thanks very much for the help sarran, i was speaking to somebody who owns a bus company in our village and he thinks the engine/ gearbox isnt earthed properly would this be part of the problem as well. When the weather gets better i'll be down the scrap yard and get another coil as you were saying and look into changing the dizzy.
Thanks again Carl

Hi there C Foster

Well don't take any notice of any further advice from the bus company guy then.
If the engine had any earthing problems your starter would not work.

Try a coil by all means, but don't change the dizzy for anything but the SAME model. When getting a coil of a different vehicle, check carefully inside the bit where the centre HT lead (sometimes called the "king lead") fits, they can look very similar but be different enough to not fit your lead !

Note = unlikely but not impossible = The ignition amp on the left hand engine bay bulkhead, near the front, about the size of a 20 fag packet could be failing.

Thanks very much ghost123 thats what i thought the engine/ gearbox is bolted to the chassis so it shouldnt be a prob, ive just got another ignition control unit delivered so im going to put this on before my other coil comes through the post. Do you know if these coils are 8v or 12v as i was thinking as well it might be the wrong coil. All the reply's are putting better light on the situation, fingers crossed this will work if not i'll have to tow her to the garage and get the wiring checked.
Thanks again Carl

Not stricly true due to rubber bushes but main earth strap from engine & box to chassis takes care of all engine earthing and if that was duff the stater would not operate correctly.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.
