I learned today that Land Rover, as early as 1976, were experimenting with Viscous Transfer Boxes in the then 110 protypes. Anyone know anything about this? Do they use them in Defenders?

not sure on the defenders but i think the range rover had vc`s.

Certainly the Freelander's do. Apparently there is a guy in Leeds that does VCs

freelander has vc 100%, got one on work thats stiff. if i remember correctly they are welded sealed so not serviceable ????

Freelander VCs are made by Steyr I believe and serviced by STEC in Austria who used to do the refurbished gearboxes for our vans for VW/Steyr/Magna

Range Rover got viscous centre diff to replace the manual #clang!!!# locker about '88 or '89 IIRC.

I've still got all my RR parts books and manuals, I still fancy a late 2-door gassed 3.9, despite knowing how awful they are

Freelander 1's used slightly different diff ratios front vs. rear to achieve the front torque bias required for a soft-roader of this type. The VC was expected to do the rest but because it was always working, failures at 30k weren't uncommon...
