Metal flappy thing!
Not sure whether to use this section or machanical! 1980 2L air cooled. When you look into the engine bay there is a metal rod going from left to right. The left hand side is atached to the casing under the coil and the other to the fan housing near the alternator. There is a piece of steel wire attached to the right hand side that has been broken off and is now only a few mm long. Is this wire supposed to go to the sliders in the cab for the heating as it is all missing? When I pull what is left of the wire it rotates on a spring and seams to adjust the air flow! You can just about see it on page 17 in the Haynes and is between markers 3 and 2. I cant find a picture of it anywhere to show it!
If in doubt give it a clout!

Its all to do with the engine warm up/cooling, the cable goes to a thermostat, dont worry if its broken as long as the spring on the rod is holding the flaps open you will be ok. If its not and the flap is closed you could/will end up with an over heating problem..
Mmm what's that strange smell from my exhaust...

Ok thanx for that. I just found a picture on page 41 haynes. It is the air flap for cooling as you say. It is spring loaded so is it holding it open or closed? I have no heat in the cab. Does this flap help send the heat down the heat ducting pipe or is that only controlled by the 2 other flappy things that are in the shut position?

The spring is a fail safe, so will hold flap open so air will cool engine...and is nothing to do with cab heating, that comes from the heater pods that get their heat from the heat exchangers on the exhaust manifolds..Trunkster wrote:Ok thanx for that.
