Engine goosed??

Post by Rincewind »

The current 2.0 cu Aircooled lump in the van may need replacing

so before i contemplate just how much that is going to cost, i would prefer to consider whether this engine isn't worth sorting

basically when cold, the engine is really slow to turn over before starting, at which point i get alot, and i mean ALOT of white ish smoke

i took it yesterday to the garage who'm i used for years, so i sort of trust, and they have advised this morning they think the engine getting oil into the bores somehow, and that is hydraulicing causing the slow start and the subsequent smoke once started

so, worth fixing or new engine?

i bow to your greater experience in this field, as i have no idea, and i've yet to break it to the wife....

My two-pennyworth - oil in the bores will give you blue smoke not white. Get a better garage!
All cables checked for high resistance? Starter bush replaced?
Air cold experts will doubtlessly stick their heads above the xmas turkey and puds soon. :)

Slow turning over, I would be looking at the starter motor first. Have a good look at the earths and also remove it and check that the bush is not wornout in the bellhousing. When the starter is off clean its mounting face to the bell housing as well...Now that could well sort one problem out..
Is the engine using alot of oil? It takes alot to break a CU engine, have even seen them still running with hardly any lobes left on the cam..

..

Go to it when the engine is cold, take the plugs out, take one of the connectors off the coil that has thin wires going to it, (to temporarily kill the ignition sparks) then spin it on the starter.
If lots of droplets of oil fly out of the plug holes then they could be right.

I bet no oil comes out = they are wrong and it is not hydraulicing. It would have to be VERY damaged for that to happen

Is the inside of the tail pipe WET with oil ? (note, not just sooty, but WET with oil) ?

As said above - oil smoke is blue and STINKS of burning oil.

White smoke is a bit odd though, not got any Diesel fuel in there by mistake have you ?

I would feed the carb(s) with some fresh petrol and see what happens.

Re the lazy starting, did that come on all of a sudden ?
As said, check battery (borrow one off the wife's car !) and all the heavy cable connections.

Let us know...
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Well the van is still at the garage, so i'm doing this from memory, but i do remember some months ago when starting the van black droplets being on someones trousers who was stood behind it when it started, definately not soot as i recall, and this would be over 12months ago. it does use oil, but i put that more down to the various seals that really should be replaced

checked the battery it it was fine, though when starting it from cold, it is reminisant of a flat battery trying to start it, along with a squeaking sound much akin to metal being very tight. its only ever failed to start once, and it wouldn't even turn the engine. left it a couple of days and it reluctantly did. As it turned over it started to turn over very slowly at first then faster until it eventually started

its run on lpg, would that explain the colour of the smoke? When i say clouds of smoke, as its revv'd, i could be a one van smog. allow it to tick over and it relents

Lazy starting has only been happening for a couple of months and only at first start of the day, i put in new leads and plugs and this seemed to help as its never been the best at starting anyway

classic worn starter bush..it's not the engine that's tight, if it's using oil then it's too loose!!

white ..steam is normal on start up
black smoke when revved is over fueling
pale blue smoke is oil.

steam and pale blue smoke, does not mean goosed.

I'd change the garage too.. sorry :D

Hello,

Oilite bush

http://en.serial-kombi.com/index.php?Id ... h&Action=2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm sure this is dealt with elsewhere, but it would do no harm to drop the motor, check all starter motor electrics, clean the inside of the bellhousing, check the clutch, and thrust release bearing. Press out old oilite bearing, press in new after 24 hrs oil soak,

It's a VW thing!!

Cordialement,

:ok
