Front diff switch and vacuum system

Post by Roving Rich »

Hi Guys, well my Syncro is finally on the road in 4x4 mode YAY !
Well nearly - a few things to sort out ofcourse, but it is now MOT'd and ready for the snow.
The immediate list is
Reversing lights - new switch needed (Found they don't work unless the engine is actually running ie not just ignition on)
Heater fan not working. Just tried shorting the switch and no joy, so figuring its the motor burried deep in the dashboard....
Front diff lock not "actuating" Well having got it all back together with a new actuator I discovered that the actuator shaft is in upside down ! It all seemed to work allright on the bench. But when I went to put the actuator on the shaft wouldn't line up. I couldn't face stripping it all out again, so just redrilled the actuator bracket to accommodate.
Next was work out the I'm staring to try and suss out the vacuum system.
If I disconnect at the reservoir I have plenty of suction.
One way valve seems to work, but it sings like a clarinet after the engine is switched off ?
The third pipe seems to have little to no vacuum with the reservoir connected ? Pull the reservoir pipe and block it and that seem to work.
Now where does it go ??? There are 3 pipes at the switches. I assumed the middle one which goes to both switches is the common, but still appears to have no vacuum ?
Then neither do the other 2 ??
I Is Confused :?
So the nearest pipe seems to be a loop too ? rather than just to the actuator......

Anyone got any insights ?
It doesn't seem to covered in the Wiki ?

Thanks for your help guys. I look forward to meeting some of you in the flesh now its finally on the road.

Cheers
Rich

Here is a link to a diagram of diff lock plumbing, I found it pretty useful

Wow - your a Gent Lloydy.
I don't think I would ever have found that.
Mine didn't hiss loudly when I removed the pipe from the reservoir...guess I'll start with a new one way valve.
And my deductions were correct - the centre common pipe should be the one from the reservoir.

Thanks for your help

As I got shown, you can remove the one way valve, give it a good blow/suck! Squirt with WD40 and repeat, normally gets it working again

start at the take off t piece in the servo line and work your way forward. you can clamp the rubber pipes gently and see if that stops the buzzing.

buzzing of the one way valve normally means you have a vac leak post valve and not a faulty valve.

Nice one -
(Don's hat coat and torch and heads off into the darkness beneath the syncro)
I'll give it a go and see if it stops buzzing.
