The choke is 'On' when the butterfly valve is shut, this restricts the flow of air allowing the engine to run on a much richer mixture. The flap is operated by a coiled bi-metal strip which (once set correctly) gradually unwinds as the coolant temperature increases, opening the valve and allowing more air through to lean the mixture ... shown by the receeding engine revs.

Do you 'set' the choke ? single press of the pedal BEFORE starting up ?
