i had an Audi 80 tdi in my westy.
Apparently Audi engines are the best ones for conversions, I'm not sure why someone told me that years ago.
If you want my opinion, don't go tdi put a non tdi or even a non turbo 1.9 I think they drive nicer and the 1.9 n/a tolerates the crappy t25 gear ratios better.

et viola http://youtu.be/9_xYR97Gl7o
this was into a petrol van, many custom bits including engine mounts, the early tdi's don't have built-in immobilisers :ok fortunately gearbox was an '8D' code, 4.86 final drive which ain't all that bad - 3H territory I think, so some slightly above stock wheels will do for cruising at 60 but re-gear will probably have to wait for funds

not sure what your chuckleing about. if the sentence "non turbo" makes you laugh then you need to get out more.
a 1.9 na suits a t25 better because 1.9 tdi's do not like revving beyond 4500 RPM. 1.9 na suits the crap ratios on the t25 (they all have crap ratios) if the ratios were good Aidan Talbot wouldn't make much money.
The standard gear'box is the weak link of any engine conversion.

But surely the 1.6TD is a better engine than the 1.9na, certainly drives better in my experience..

Anyway, the person who started this thread mentions in their own text that the engine they are thinking of installing is an AAZ, which we all know isnt a Tdi anyway, its a standard Turbo Diesel, which is good and very common replacement for 1.9na and ageing 1.6TD lumps.

But as you say, it all depends on gear ratio's, which being a 1.9 Petrol, i would wager it will probably have a taller final drive than your usual diesel box, meaning it will probably be quite well suited for the Turbo Diesel rev range.

Agreed going Tdi takes more time/money/skill, if you're lacking in any or all of those then stick with a 1.9na. If not, get a TDi in there and marvel at the modern/responsive/fuel efficient van you've created.

That's if you want my opinion.........

tdi,s dont need to rev beyond 4500rpm...they produce all the pulling power low down in the rev range...right where you want it.
