loads of smoke on starting, still.

Post by spannered2 »

hello people. 1600 diesel. huge clouds of smoke when i try and turn it on, needless to say it refuses.
tested. the things people suggested choke, glo plugs.
timing. injectors.
all o/k. however now coming to the injector pump ,aagh.

anyone know how i can test it ? what happens when this goes?

lastly. anyone know a decent/cheap place in south yorkshire, or environs, to have the pump refurbed.

thanks for looking.

regards spannered.

How have you tested that the glow plugs are working?

hi. i tested the glow plugs are working by taking out the injectors and visually seeing them glow. i intended to test the compression on the pots however the s/picavant tester does not fit. do you know if there is a addapter that fits between the large thread on the block and the small thread on the tester?

Was that with the glow plugs powered by the switch on circuit or external power? The symptoms do suggest that they are not working. Do you have an ammeter fitted? Check that the plugs are working by switching on at night with the headlights on - if the lights dim they should be working, if not closer examination will be needed. Have you checked the glow plug relay and fuse - there could be an intermittent connection? If you know any electrician with a clamp on meter they will be able to tell you straight away how they are performing.
My compression tester goes in the glow plug holes - may be yours does?

Yeah - Id leave the pump for now - given the amount of smoke and its colour id say the pump was filling your cylinders just fine! This is likely to be glows, but even with one or two going it would probably go eventually with plenty of churning, assuming compressions reasonable.

I have an easy acid test, gleaned from a farmer to check this - this is how they started tractors with knackered glo plugs

Boil a kettle, take it out and pour hot water over the cylinder head going back and fore accross the head in the injector /plug area.

The engine should start then, this will determine if the issue is glow plugs.

I had a citroen AX diesel for a while and this trick started it every day for 2 winters. (It wasnt glo's - they had a strange bucket/shim arrangement that meant valaves didnt open enough to start in cold weather and it was £150 run around so i couldnt be bothered...)

These engines are very simple - not much will stop them starting as long as you have compression, diesel and a bit of warm.
