Van broken down! What could it be HELP!!!!

Post by bradders89 »

My 1.9 dg has been running lumpy for a while. It clogges up and wont clear untill i floor it after a few seconds. But returning home from work it done the same as usuall but didnt clear, only got worse untill it threw LOTS of smoke out and crawled along at like 5mph untill she finally conked out. Could it be somthink simple or not?

Is this Carb or injection? sounds like the engine is flooding, getting too rich...look at:

Float chamber needle valve seating (if carburretor)
Blocked air filter
Faulty choke unit (butterfly not holding open when warm)

She is a carb. Just taken plugs out and they were all coaked up with what looked to be oil? She started back up and ticked over fine but kicked out lots of smoke. When i tryed to move it she really lacked in power. Also when i took the inlet trunking off it was full of a oiley resdue. The airfilter has oil on it to.

i had exactly the same problem about a month or so ago so done the plugs, filter, fuel filter, and it ran great then it started to cut out for no apparent reason so i thought van/engine might be f*ck*d.found out the battery was completely knackered and its ran like a dream since.got a battery from local scrappy for £20,cheers dave :ok

Are the plugs oily wet or dry black soot? being sure which tells 2 very different stories with figuring out whats wrong as one is engine prob and the other is normally carb settings ;)
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

ide say they were oily. i cleaned them off with a wire brush then she started but still smoked bad and wold hardy pull. Also put a different battery on. Could it be that the oil breather is letting oil into to carb or have the piston rings gone?? When i pulled the plug from No 1 after runing the engine there was abit of smoke coming from the plug hole with a slight oily smell.

Is the breather hose to the carb 'beret' collapsing ?

bradders, ian doesn't mean perished....but if the sides have pulled in, ie sucked in or as Ian says, collapsed. if this pipe isnt free flowing, your engine can't breath, and pressure builds up....and all sorts of nastiness happens. xx

Oh i see! Well no it isnt. I did run it without the carb 'berat' connected for a min or two and it still smoked. Not sure if it made it any better.

As Emm wisely says ... our's started collapsing after 5-7 miles with similar breathing issues. I replaced the hose and it stopped.

When was the oil changed ? What was the last emissions test like ? If the engine's over-filled (even by 1 litre) the excess oil can be pushed up the breather tube into the beret down through the carb and stalling (and oily plugs) will most likely follow.

try taking the oil breather pipe off and going for a spin , or putting it into an empty drinks bottle to collect any outgoings.

presume the smoke was blue , not black or white?

Not sure on what colour as it was dark. And in response to ian not sure on the imissions as the mot was done befor i bought the van and i dont think i have the print out from it. Oil was changed begining of september with 15w40 i think. and was topped up to the level. Not had much trouble untill the past few weeks with how i describe, the engine cloggin up and wouldnt clear untill i gave it a foot full and it spat all the "pooh" out! She did smoke bad on first start up with black ish smoke.
