80/100w bulbs

Post by axeman »

has or are any one using 80/100w bulbs, and to what effect are they, are you blinding oncoming drivers? also i am guessing that they burn hotter so are they more prone to failing compaired to to a 55/60w bulb, are these legal? i am running sperate relays for each of my head lights and the wiring from the relys to the head lights has been compleatly renewed using 20amp (from memory) cables including the earths, so i think that the cableing would be up to the job.

thanks neil

When does that stop people? They don't care if the driver in front can't see, that's why 30% of cars seem to have a headlight pointing to the heavens

If you need them asap then I recently get mine from my local eurocarparts branch

Enter code winter25 at checkout for 25% discount which makes them a more sensible price then select collect rather than free delivery

£16.48 :ok

i have some 80/100s. Waste of time. The Osram Silverstars were way brighter and legal. :D

Proper relays essential of course. You can't improve headlights just by upgrading bulbs.

Would agree^^^^^, 80/100's seem to have the wrong spread of light and I tried these years ago, yes more wattage but not exactly shinig up ther road where you want it. I did have some 55/100's which I think fitted to some marchal? units a bit ago and they worked

Where can an appropriate relay be bought? Brickworks don't seem to have one

Not only are these high powered bulbs illegal but they tend to be poorer quality. When you consider the light pattern is controlled by the precise placement of the illuminating ellement within the lamp it's becomes clear why some of these don't give a good pattern.
At least by buying an Osram or Philips (Nighbreaker/Extreme) bulbs there is no doubt about the quality and function and with the better R&D at their disposal, these manufacturers have managed to get up to 90% more light from the same wattage (that might be an exageration but they certainly are significantly better)

Agree Martin. I did (briefly) trial some 80/100s when looking at ways to improve vision but was amazed at just how much better the Osrams were in comparison. Since then I've fitted a headlight booster and relays with great results. Please don't anyone bother asking me about the booster unit as I've never seen any since so can't suggest where they could be bought but they did improve matters beyond the relays - considerably. The only downside perhaps is that whilst the dipped pattern passed the MOT, personally I found them much too high and lowered them as I was lighting up pedestrians legs like a searchlight :D

I suppose the moral is, you CAN really improve the headlights but you need:

a) good reflectors
b) good quality legal bulbs
c) relays to get over the inherent voltage drop on T25s.

With all the cable, I suppose around £40 ish. Either way, 80/100s are not the solution.
