Hi we are playing with the idea of buying a new (to us) engine as we are totally stumped on why "Bert" is not running properly. He has new plugs, lines, distributor cap, fuel pump etc etc.
What engines are easily put into a 1985 watercooled???

you can put a rolls royce olympus engine in it... it all depends on your budget
think i will park under the concorde at manchester and see one will fit on the roof. Fuel consumption should be same as the 1.9, but hills should be a blast with the afterburner on
We aren't sure what it is at all - it is worst case scenario to replace the engine. It runs, looks ok, we are just getting impatient as we can't find the problem.
We've had a couple of people (mechanics) look at it too and we are still none the wiser.
We think now we have a fuel problem and it seems impossible to get it to tick over properly.
I think it is now worse as we were going to use it as one of our main vehicles and that doesn't seem likely for the time being.

It occurs to me that the concept of spending hundreds of pounds and swapping over engines (and all that involves) because of a couple of running issues seems a bit over the top

Let us know how you get on.
particularly if they are ignition / electrical related....cos they will still be there!!

indeed.
I would say if it has had a major component failure (rare) or the repair to worn out components, out weighs the cost of a working replacement from either here BY or Ebay.. or one with a warranty from elite
