is my alternator charging ?
wonder if someone could give me some advice please ? i recently had a problem with the battery light flashing on and off which i traced to a dodgy connection , since then my battery light has been on but very dull you can only notice it at night with no lights on and even then its very faint, due to a starting problem which i put down to the battery ( which i now know is the oilite bush ) i bought a new battery , i decided to put my old battery on charge to see what state it was in and within 10 mins the charger said it was fully charged ! does this mean my alternator is ok and may be another dodgy connection somewhere ? i had a multimeter on the battery when running and it said 13.6 volts any advice is gladly received jeff

Re: is my alternator charging ?
Hi Jeff
I had this very same issue for ages.. turned out to be the diode in the alternator.
It stayed glowing for ages till it died in cornwall six weeks later.
I had to replace it, but I believe you can repair it with a new diode

within 10 mins the charger said it was fully charged !
Check the voltage after leaving the battery off charge for 24 hours. If you check it as soon as you take it off charge you'll just be getting a surface charge reading. This value can drop off dramatically after a few hours if the battery is u/s. The 13.6v with the engine running is ok. The range is normally 14.4v to 13.5v.

Can you take it to an alternator repairer near you?
He can check it out and tell you if the diode is on it's last legs...
