Absolutely love it. You can pitch where you want and although it can get a little noisy on a hot weekend dune side, there are a lot of little spots you can pitch where you're away from the madding crowd. There's a lot of space so you're not regimented. Oh and then there's the fabulous sunsets....

Agree with Rob = Don't go when it is likely to be busy = can get very rowdy and the dunes can echo with all sorts of "urban" noises till the early hours.
It has a cafe & a bar that are OK when not full of pi**ed up chavs.

On the other hand (and I am repeating what has been said, I know) on a quiet weekend, or even better quiet weekday / night, it can be very nice indeed.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

It certainly was - the first weekend in July this year and it was so hot we could only bear a couple of hours on the beach before looking for shade. We have an event at Shell Island every year with anywhere between 80-330 parents & children but because the island is so large, our group simply merges into the background.

If you can tear yourself from the island, Nantcol Waterfalls are just a couple of miles away and well worth seeing too as well as some of the nearby seaside towns.

yes its a great place but, i would invest in a portapotie. the portaloos dotted round shell island can become pretty rank at times. the main toilet and shower block is usualy kept clean though.depending on where you park these could be quite a walk away.
