Which oil is best for VW T25 Campervan please ?
Hi
I have a 1989 1.6 turbo diesel VW Westfalia California campervan, which was serviced about a month ago. Yesterday, I checked the oil and was surprised to see very little in the tank. The garage said they had filled it, but gave me more oil anyway.
There is no oil leak, well there's no wet patch on the concrete drive, to indicate such a leak, so maybe the oil fairy comes during the night.
I have decided I better buy some, just to keep in the van for when I am away; the van is also my daily runner. the mechanic suggested a 10 40 semi synthetic oil, but of course there are many to choose from
There are own brand oils from Halford's, Morrison's and even Wilkinson's which match the suggested type, as well as the far more costly branded oils.
Which would people recommend please. I don't want to ruin my engine for a few extra quid, but don't like buying branded goods just for the sake of it. If the folk here tell me that brand X is worth paying twice the price ... I'll certainly buy it, but just want to make sure.
thanks in advance !!

I use halfords own brand oils in everything, cars, bikes and van. I am using semi- synthetic in the van, but I am sure that there are those on here that will be along to advise otherwise

15w/40 mineral oil. I wouldn't use anything with the word 'Synthetic' in.
Even my sheets are 100% Cotton.

It matters not who makes the oil... I use lidl if I can get it
what matters is the frequency..and that is twice a year

I am confused by the use of the word 'tank' in the OP.
I would advise checking the oil on a regular basis of one week rather than a month.
When I used to use an officially provided car daily checks had to be completed and signed for - oil, water, tyres etc. - well worth getting into the habit rather than doing it ad hoc.

This question comes up too often and we then get umpteen pages, all repeating whats been said before on the subject, hence:

I don't comment on d****l questions because I know nothing about them ... However I would strongly recommend checking your fluids daily ... at least untill you become acquainted with each other's habits.
