So has anyone got fuel returns for their Etdi?
as I am interested in what further MPG increase
Can be gained over Mtdi
I'm trying to make up my mind
If it would be worth it for me.

I think that there are few variables to take into consideration. Odometer inaccuracy variants and humans. People sometimes seem to give higher than actual readings for MPG. Whether that is because they want their engine to be the best or that they are just guessing with no real data.

To get accurate results people could check their speedo with GPS, put up litres of fuel used and recorded mileage.

This is true, I will happily recount the mpg figures for my longer trips (25ish mpg) but dont want to tell anyone about the 21mpg driving around the Devon Lanes.

I am happy when I get over 500kms from a tank, but that pretty-much is just on longer 4th gear runs.

No I dont think so. If you get 35 from a diesel then thats about it.

There is a lot of discussion about speedo heads and drives, final drive ratios and tyre sizes and RPM and the relationship between them all and there are Excel spread sheets available to work out what the speed should be and they are very accurate. When Aidan built my bespoke transmission I reckoned (by calculation) Id be doing 60mph at about 3100 which is what I felt would be the best for economy and engine life and the spreadsheet I used was pretty well spot on. By GPS measurement 60mph arrives at 3200 on the rev counter. I know there are people here who think that they are doing 60mph @ 2400 with their AAZ!! What some dont realise is that if you upgrade from a JX diesel to AAZ or whatever, you need to have the same crank pulley to alternator pulley ratio as a JX or you wont get the proper rev counter reading.

I don't have the patience to record things that accurately. All I know is that I get between 500-600km's out of a tankfull. And most of the varieties in that are wether the tank actually filled up properly. As a guesstimate I reckon about 28mpg. But that's driving at under 60mph.
I'll be interested to see what I get from it with longer gears and a charge cooler before I drop a tdi in.

Lloyd I don't want to worry you but yor fuel returns or calculations are not that accurate, I know that you said that you were guessing 28mpg. But if when you refilled there was 5 litres left in the tank (no one wants to run dry especially in a diesel) and you managed 500km ( near as dam it 300miles) then you are getting around 20/21mpg. 600km (let's say 360m) then you will be getting 23/24mpg. With your distance/fuel readings your getting wbx fuel figures from my calculations. Well that's the sort of range that I got with my old mv,

Don't worry, I'm not panicking :lol:
I don't run the tank dry before refilling. On my summer hols I made a note of litres put in and km's driven. Worked out at 28mpg average over holidays.
Which I'm happy with. To be honest, I never think about it until one of these threads appear. Not one of those things that bother me.

You could add the 5l from the filler tube when its brimmed, 600km is 372 miles...

A gallon in the tube?!! Really? I'd never have thought it would hold that, maybe 2 or 2.5l max but never considered it before...

I think that if anyone can wring 35 mpg out of a T3 in Westy guise, it's a miracle, diesel or not.

so say 65l or 14.3 gallons,600km or 372 miles = 26mpg
And i never run it near empty

Nah not really... the point being you could get technical about being precise when it doesnt matter really. Lloyd gets about 28mpg, you claim to get about this in an empty van, others get 16mpg from an MV their may be talk of 19mpg from a Volvo etc If you have a pair of brown slacks on, Bruce Willis vest and sporting a mustache while standing on one leg drinking umbongo whiles on the phone to a lady called ingrid, Lloydy still gets around 28mpg

Jake can get 40mpg in a fully loaded Westfalia Syncro and I know he isnt full of sh*t. Now that interests me :mrgreen:

i can see 40mpg out of a tdi more than possible best i`ve recorded was 34 mpg but that included off roading with the engine running all day. recon that trip must have been 38 ish road mpg.

rich has had 38mpg out of his tdi and thats got serious grunt.
