Re: give up
some more detail?
what happens when you turn the ignition on to start her up - ?
have you checked battery/ starter motor/ ignition switch?
is all the ignition components working? coil? plugs? leads? distributor? ignition amplifier? timing?
do you get a spark at the plugs - and fuel from the fuel pump?
av you ad a look at -

Re: give up
I have recently had a couple of occaisions when our 1.9DG would not restart after drive while still warm. Absolutely would not fire a cylinder.
I tried a wriggle of the pickup device in the distributor, under cap, the rotor and plastic disc, also removed and replaced the electrical connector on the distributor side.
Back in the seat and started immediately as normal!!
This hasn't happened since so cant be sure I found the problem as the first time it happened it started OK next day. so ???

Re: give up
that might be a partial answer right there -
so is she cranking up and running at the moment? -
do these random stop/starts have any pattern to them?
are all the cables and hoses connected to the right places?
whats the condition of your spark plugs?
if you've got the legs - this months practical classics has got a whole section on servicing and tuning your ignition -
including testing and servicing your coil - distributor - vacuum advance - etc
theres got to be a way of checking each component of your ignition system (assuming the fuel supply side is ok) to see where the fault is?
keep us updated -
i am a beginner in this knowledge - but i remember a seasoned comment from mocki on this site some months ago - saying - work methodically! - go through each phase of the fuel/ignition system one section at a time - to find out why its not starting -
perserverance furthers - as the old mechanics used to say!

Re: give up
What did you do to fix it last time? As edoh says, we need more detail in order to help. What does the van do when you turn the key?
There's loads of info in 80-90 tech section about starting problems. Just noticed your previous thread about not starting:
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... ilit=start" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It might be a starter motor (or related) problem rather than a plugs etc problem.
Tony
