cold start ?

cold start ?
wonder if someone can help me please ? i own a 1983 1.9dg when it starts from cold it struggles to tick over after driving about 200 yards its fine it s an auto if that makes any difference ? thanks in advance jeff

it starts ok just a bit dodgy on tickover maybe i should check the plugs and leads

If its ok once properly warmed up, suspect choke. Otherwise a new set of plugs/leads may be the order of the day. I have the very same engine and know it pretty well. Air leaks (unconnected or split hoses) can also cause this as can an old air filter.

Do you 'set' the choke properly ? Single press of the accelerator pedal before turning the key but after you do your daily checks.

changed the plugs and leads but no difference
it will tick over but sounds like its about to die but if i go and blip the throttle the revs increase and it revs faster than normal so i assume the chokes working maybe i need to adjust it ? also it stinks of petrol when it first starts any help or advice gratefully recieved jeff
