Oh no... I reckon my GearBox has just died!

Post by yodster »

It is with quivering hand and an impending sense of dread that I write the following...

Had a slightly floppy clutch issue developing recently and then suddenly last night there was a dreadful grinding, clunky sound and Kevin the Campervan stopped moving. It starts, it revs, but sadly I can now put it into gear WITHOUT depressing the clutch and I get naff all movement... Any ideas?

Please be gentle! :run

First thing, what were the exact circumstances when this grinding & clunking happened ?

Like were you moving ?
Were you changing gear ?
Were you just putting it into gear to move off ?

Whatever it is (and we WILL find it) it's not the end of the world.
Even if it is the box (and it may well not be) they are not that hard to find on here second hand.

Hooray for the kindness of VW owners!
I was driving along, merrily minding my own business... Might have been about to do a gear change but cant remember. Don't think I was... :?

Umm well in all honesty that doesn't sound too good :(

I was hoping it might have been a gear linkage thing.

I have just sent a p.m. to our resident G/Box builder & expert and I am sure he will be along soon to offer professional advice.

Sounds like the clutch plate has expired as there were symptoms immediately beforehand?

thanks for the offer Billy, but I'm in Epsom so I think thats a bit of a big 'pop' for you! Have found a VW CamperMan near Betchworth who hopefully might be able to do something - unless anyone has any better/cheaper ideas!

drop the box look at state of the clutch? (2 people can do this roadside - one if you are strong and know what you are doing I guess!)

investigate the health of the spigot bearing? (mine disintegrated.....result being that the gear box stayed in gear, although I thought I was in neutral - weird or what? - just wondered if yours was something like this....but you say you have no drive at all, so not sure)

Crawl underneath and ensure the CV bolts are all in place

oh...and while your at it...ensure that whe you change gear in the cab, its changing gear at the box? Check the run of the linkage....

ahh clutch fluid...is it present? When was it last changed?

The last three are checks that you can do yourself. Might not be of any help, but its all related to the issue you are having, so worth knowing the answers.
