So that's the big black wire (from the main battery) and at least 1 red wire going to the 13 mm nut shaft on the solenoid . On the other side of the plastic divider is the spade terminal with 1 wire. All bright and clean and shiny please.
Now look at the earth return, battery terminal strap fixing to body, gearbox earth strap. Condition as above
I did clean up all the terminals and connectors with steel wool and then added copperslip grease when fitting them. I hope to get underneath it again tonight and will check the gearbox earth as I'm not sure about that one? I did seem to be hearing a click coming from behind the drivers seat somewhere so maybe have an earth point that needs looking at there?

I do have a digital multimeter.
Thanks
Clicking sound from behind the drivers seat will most likely be the relay for the fridge or the split charging system if it has 2 batteries. try and find it then unplug it - if it has wiring issues it will cause more problems whilst you bottom out the starter motor problem, look in the wiki for basic carb settings:- https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ca ... ultfinding

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!
is the battery you are using ok? you can have 12v but if the electrolite is knackered then it will not start. physically put another battery in the bus and try it. you could also try rocking it in gear to put things into a different position.

Yes it does have 2 batteries and a split charging system. Will hunt it out later. Thanks.

One of the two (non leisure) batteries is dead and the other holds a charge. But I have been hooking the starter battery direct to a 2 litre diesel engine and trying to jump it.
Hi All
Having yet another look at this now as I didn't get anywhere last time and gave up again due to other commitments. Guy from Elite VW told me to check the gearbox earth? I don't recall seeing one of them so will have a look later on. In case its missing, should this earth wire be attached to certain points on the gearbox and chassis, or can I just run one from where ever is convenient, if you see what I mean?
Thanks
Well gearbox earth is okay. Disconnected the big relay that connects the two batteries but still nothing on the key other than a dimming of the interior light?
Took all the plugs out so it could spin over if it would respond to the key. Whilst I had them out I put it in gear and moved it forwards and backwards and the engine turns over fine and definitely isn't seized etc.
So this Saturday (weather permitting) I'm going to allocate some time to getting this thing to fire up. Anything you can advise or would do yourself would be greatly appreciated.
Given up on the van again. I cant seem to get it to turn over at all? Cant even tow it to Elite VW who are just up the road to me, but have now found a local specialist, Richard Morena http://www.morena.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; who is going to come and have a look at it for me. Wonder if it'll finally run after all these years!
It lives! Set the static timing, fitted a new battery and fired it up and she went straight away! Carbs are all over the place so I'm going to strip them and clean/rebuild them to factory settings. Then see how it runs. if the engine runs and pulls well enough we'll stick though an MOT!
Does anyone know the url for the website that had illustrated solex carb rebuild instructions on?
For the benefit of the archives this is the page I was referring to. http://www.vw-resource.com/carb.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
