probs with coil

Post by c.foster »

Hi all, i've just been towed back home and the breakdown service thinks the coil is knackered. I only just had it replaced yesterday morning does anybody know why these will breakdown so quick or if it's the wiring to the coil whats the problem any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
The van is a 1.9dg

you need to find out if it is the coil or the hall sender

OK first we need to know if you have a spark at the king lead.

have you a regular bright white spark when the lead is pulled from the distributor and placed near a ground/earth point as the engine is turned over?

found this..

but it sounds like your problem lies elswhere and not the coil and hall sender

what's the problem with the engine?

would it be possible that the timing has jumped out as it just stopped and no spark, as i have power going into the dizzy but nothing coming out to the plugs or lack of power from the battery. The van has started to make me pull my hair out as ive just had a recon engine fitted.
thanks Carl

No spark?
hang on you have just tested your ignition circuit and there is a spark.

Lets start again
you had a recon engine and it fitted did it run ok?
then it broke down and there was no spark?

now you have tested the spark and there is one,

intermittent sparking maybe you need to check this assuming all the leads are good placed in the correct order.. and the plugs are correct and gapped right, that the coil earth wire is sound and making a good earth.

Hall Sender Switching Function

To check Hall sender function, check its ability to switch the primary circuit. Remove the coil wire from the center of the distributor and connect it to ground with a jumper wire. With the Hall sender connected, carefully push back the rubber connector boot to expose the back of the wire connections. Connect an LED test light between the center terminal and the positive (+) battery terminal, . When the starter is actuated, the LED should flicker. If there is no reaction, the Hall sender is defective and should be replaced.

timing for the DG is done by strobe.. five deg BTDC
close to the correct timing is having No 1 cylinder ATDC on the firing stroke (both valves shut) and the rotor arm pointing to No1 lead, connected to No 1 plug in No 1 cyl
