Must fix speakers on PC!
Just picked up 5 X BFG AT (Awesome Tyre)from Futbus today. So if I ever get van working I'll be sorted for the winter.

Having driven both on Winter Radials and AT's in last years snow, there is no comparison. The film results are very realistic.
and they are based on a 2 wheel drive!

Dave's done well today - we picked up a VC, one BFG, and Mrs Futbus' old CB radio plus I have reserved most of the bits I need to build our new 2.1 DJ. Complete result

Re: Anyone seen this?
I need to replace my front tyres this week - I am guessing I can't have difference on front and back?
Woman question now (sorry
) If you buy winter tyres do you simply lose your summer ones, even if they are good? Or can you get the summer ones put back on later? Thereby having to store them somewhere in the meantime.

Re: Anyone seen this?
you just keep the summer tyres. better still have another set of wheels and just swap them over as the season turns

Re: Anyone seen this?
That's a good demonstration for winter tyres. Perhaps It would be good for those who don't follow the Syncro threads to see it, as it is even more valuable to 2WD drivers.
For comparison it would have been nice to see how the winter tyre performs on normal dry roads which we also have for much of the winter.
The danger of showing how good these tyres are is that some users will believe they become invincable driving too fast when everything around them has slowed down. We've all seen the Range Rover type travelling far too fast "because they can" in snow and slush showering everyone else and causing those who can't steer and stop too easily to take evasive action because of them.
An important message is we should all slow down in poor conditions even if we can stop and steer.
Donna it would be bad practice to fit winters to the front and leave summers on the back. The combination and imbalence in grip will potentially casue handling issues in both good and poor conditions. In conditions where your front winters are performing well and your rear summers are struggling, you could well end up leaving the road backwards on a corner, which is never going to be good.
Regards,
Mike.

Re: Anyone seen this?
Living in Denmark i have always changed over to winter tyres in september or october and there is a definate difference bellow 7 degrees. i will say though that with winter tyres you really do get what you pay for and some tests over here have seen the cheaper chinese tyres explode before they reach there speed rating!!
If we get a hot dry winters day the tyres feel a bit spongy, almost like the feeling that the pressures are down a bit even though they are not. In a lot of northern european countries it is a legal requirement to have winter tyres on between certain dates( Germany, Sweden)and if you are stopped on top of a huge fine you will also get a police escort to the local tyre fitters where you will pay through the nose for four new shoes before you can carry on!.
Winter tyres don`t make you invinceable they just give you the feeling back so you can react in time( like when you brake on black ice and can`t actually feel what the front wheels are doing)and they give your brakes and steering the chance to do their job instead of things happening( on summertyres) so quickly that your buried in a snow drift before you even realised that you had a problem.
Remember that apart from the initial investment it does`nt cost any more to have two sets of tyres as you are not wearing two sets out at the same time.
there is also the all season tyre which is an option for those who dont want to have two sets but it is like everything a compromise,
but remember whatever you do and however much money you spend England will still grind to a complete standstill at the first mention of snow
good luck and remember BE CAREFULL OUT THERE !!

Re: Anyone seen this?
I put this vid up so people could see the difference between proper winter tyres and all other tyres. BFG M/T tyres and BFG A/T tyres and the like are not winter tyres. They seem good because of the 4WD system but in actual fact the compound has gone hard and are no good at all. I suppose it will take someone to have an accident .......

Interesting! I run Goodyear wrangler ultragrip m/s 225/75/15 on 7j alloys all year round, they are quiet on the road and more than capable off. Another topical point is they don't chew up fragile greenlanes like a/t or m/t,s.
Win-Win I'd say
p.s What tyres did VW fit originally ?

Re: Anyone seen this?
It would be a total waste of money for me/England to have the same tyre regulations as colder parts of Europe, Especially so here in the SouthWest. Because of the gulf stream, bringing warm water up from the equator, our winters are nothing like the countries mentioned.
We have had unusually cold winters for the past 3 years when snow has stayed on the ground for a whole week. Prior to that I can't remember snow lasting more than a day.
Also ridiculous to go on that we/uk all grinds to a halt at the first sight of snow. I remember absolute chaos in Europe last year because they had a worse weather than they are used to, The same applies here only our systems have to cope with much higher congestion levels as there are more cars/people in a smaller area. Simple to understand really.

I run a similar style tyre from Continental and find the same. VW fitted various tyres over the life of the Syncro but I know that the last two RHD Syncros were fitted with 185 R14 Semperit M&S tyres

Re: Anyone seen this?
i think that the south west of england is the exception rather than the rule as far as weather is concerned but even if you remove snow from the equation, black ice has always been a big problem in the most of england and reducing your braking distance by 7 metres at 50 ( in a brand new seat with abs and esp and not a syncro with a 20+year old braking system!)in the rain at 6+ degrees could never be described as a total waste of money???

and i wrote the first mention of snow not the first sight of it!
The first sight of it is complete chaos!!!
