Does anyone do compression testing (CT) on a regular basis i.e. every 3 - 6 months?
I've just come across CT as a test to do which helps you to get to know your engine and ascertain if the engine is wearing evenly. I see in the wiki that there is a good link how to CT and read the results.
If you have one, what make model of CT do you use and can recommend?
I don;t have an issue (that i'm aware of) and i'm looking to prevent rather than cure - if that makes sense - as i planning some longer trips in the new year and want to make sure the o'girl will be up to it!

then the best practice is change your oil twice a year... and filter once
I'd fit a cylinder head temp gauge and a oil pressure gauge too

Compression testing is/was part of every main VAG service back in the day when these vans were new.
Our Volkswagen dealership used the MotoMeter compression tester with 'recordable cards'
Like this one.

See how the head is reset after each cylinder to a different point on the card so an accurate reading is recorded on the disposable cards.

So is it more a case of testing when you actually have a problem rather than bothering to run a test to ascertain engine health?
Anyone know what size thread i would need if i did get one - they tend to come in 10,12 and 14mm sizes. My engine is an '82 air cooled 2.0 CU.

Old school 14mm....
In truth a compression tester isn't going to be the most used tool in your box but very important when it's needed. Your description is spot on....a compression tester is a test of the engines mechanical fitness.
