dash lights not working

Post by jes*b »

having been beaten back by the broken parallel punch in drift pin hole on rear actuator I took a quick peek at the non working dash lights ...have read other posts, changed bulbs, checked fuses ( and the one tucked up above the fuse box), and checked plastic ribbon but thats looks good. I have read that the dimmer on the switch unit can play up? so I will swap the unit - anyone have a spare? also any other ideas of where else to check?

Also whist have a fiddle with the light switch i noticed that the hand brake dash light above it has no wiring to the back of the unit - is this an 'extra' for eg caravelles or has mine been removed at some point.

Also worth checking the "earth hedgehog" up on the front under the dash where all the earths go to, make sure for good connections and that nothing has come off...

My dash lights come on but are so dim (a bit like me) I can't read them. If I twiddle the dimmer knob they go from to dim to nothing. I have had a look at the control but it doesn't appear to be strip downable, I gave it a squirt of contact cleaner but it hasn't improved it at all.

Earths look ok. Have removed switch - any way of testing the dial part - eg continuity across the two related pins on back? Neil Axeman is posting a spare but could have a go at this one in meantime.
Also sorted brake light whist back there. Another clue that points to some shoddy maintenance history - the handbrake / fluid light plug was tucked away behind the clocks? Plugged it back in and seems to be ok.

ok Aidan great. so its a q suffix. are you saying i can either get a used q model or buy a new t model? whats funny about that?......E D I T....I have just translated a few threads from germany - am i right in thinking the extra pin config ('q' suffix) is to do with the power supply to the headlight washers (washers only work when lights are on). on '92 + vans

Ok. Fitted new switch , cheers aidan. Still no dash lights. Next steps / ideas welcome. I guess I could swap the ribbon out but it looks in good nick ? any other simple checks ? Looms all look pretty much untouched but I'm wondering whether something might have been cut when the flashing light on roof ( long gone but wiring still there, or auxiliary cab heater were wired in. Did find a grey wire cut when fitting the plastic trim around steering column - can be seen In second pic

Have you took a dash bulb out and with the side lights on, checked to see if there is voltage at the point where the bulb holder connects to the ribbon? This will eliminate the ribbon if there is voltage there.

Still waiting to progress this but in meantime .... Can I have a quick list of where bulbs for whole dash are located - just read Micky thread re. Bulb in heater controls. Where else ? I am thinking that I have no back lighting anywhere so either the bulbs have gone in all places or maybe the problem is 'centralised' somewhere - switch has been changed . I am going to check the ribbon next - does this control power to other build places ? Or are they all individual issues?
