Hello,
This is my first post on this website and I am hoping you will all be able to help me.
My brother has bought a Mk1 Caddy 1.6D and recently the engine gave up. He decided to get a replacement engine and fit that which he has now completed however the engine will not start. I understand that it might be best to get a fuel primer bulb fitted to help things along but is there anything obvious?
Is there anything he needs to do regarding setting the fueling for the engine? Is there a default setting that the engine can be set to (easily) that will allow it to run?
Any links to guides or anything like that would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: 1.6D Problems
hello , how are you and welcome
you do know this is not the caddy forum ?
whats your location?(not in your profile) if your in gloucester i can pop over!
it always tickles me when someone has the ability to change an engine but they dont know how to get it started!
was it just the engine that was changed or the complete unit , manifolds/fuel system ect
i have known these to have fuel pump faults if they are left unused for a while.
cambelt timing ok?
wiring correctly
glow plugs working ?

Re: 1.6D Problems
Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I understand this is not the caddy forum but I thought I might be able to get some good help here as I am 90% sure they all use the same engines (with slight modifications).
The car is in Bournemouth so it would be a little bit to far to bring but thank you for the offer.
I have a larger car knowledge than my brother so when he told me he had changed the engine I was impressed and I think he is 90% of the way there with just a few things to alter.
He replaced the whole engine including fuel pump, I am not sure if the cam timing is set correctly but he tried to bleed the air from the fuel system and it sounded like it wanted to start but nothing.
I thought it might be the cam timing out or maybe just no fuel getting to the fuel pump (which was why I suggested the fuel primer bulb). Is there any way to check all the timing?
I am beginning to think to just swap the fuel pumps from the old engine to the new one. Apart from setting the cam timing could this be the easier way as I know the old engine ran with that fuel pump?
Thanks again for the reply, hope you can help more
