"weight in gold"
proof that this forum is worth its weight in gold(if you can get virtual gold)! through reading a general topic on fuel munching and asking a question a chap local to me PETENALI..who i'd never previously met, offered to show me how to check my timing to 98ron fuel. arrived with no known problems, all was well. actually i was 20deg adv not 10, he sorted that but my idle went through the roof!...turns out my idle valve did nothing..replaced it and its now bang on and FLYING like never before.....and all through the good will of others my van is better than ever and cost me nothing...which is the first time in 9yrs its been improved without a bill

thanks pete...local hero!!!!!

Ahhhh good news. Always nice to have some good news.
Just wondering, how long, when was the last time anyone set your timing, have you been running around with 20* advance? Did you notice any symptoms? Pinking-running hot-fan cutting in?

no pinking but yeh the fan used to cut in pretty often and long hills were a bit of a chore...and a bit of a thirst!!!KarlT wrote:Ahhhh good news. Always nice to have some good news.

Cheers Andy - kind comments. As you know I was worried that I had got something wrong because the timing was so far out but we checked it several times and your subsequent drive up a few Cornish hills proved that we had got it spot on. I'm cross with myself that I actually felt the idle stabiliser and it wasn't vibrating like it should but I didn't recognise this. Still you had it sorted within two hours so not a bad day's work altogether?!
We should remember that all this happened because Syncrosimon started the thread on 2.1 DJs and higher octane fuel. In my experience he is a top man and uses the forum both to get info but also to help others out and has helped me big time on a couple of occasions in my short time on here.
Your engine is pretty new and nice and tight so you should be looking at 24.5 mpg on a run now.
A pleasure to meet another Cornish Syncro owner - keep in touch.
Pete

thanks pete...local hero!!!!!
What goes around comes around!! A big thanks back to you Andy for the loan of your knackered VC so that I can pick an exchange one up on Friday without having to take mine out and leave our van undriveable in between times.
Also it was good to have a drive of your Syncro which is running well. After the Picos experience I've decided to stick with the WBX and will look to give mine a thorough going over when I've finally got the 4WD fully sorted. Yours gave me a good benchmark to work to.
Thanks again Andy
