odometer and speedo

Post by ermie571 »

Hi folks,

if the speedo is wrong...is the odometer wrong too? One van records about 10 mph too fast, and the other has a VERY bouncy speedo upto about 50 mph.

Got a small LPG tank (I think its about 40 ltrs max fill) and I am getting on average 130 recorded miles out of it. Working out at a very poor 16-18 mpg.

Used to have it on the Aircooled, and was lucky to see 100 miles on the tank, so to get 130 round town and short journeys isn't too sad in comparison.

Just wondered what the effect of a dodgy cable would be?

Standard. I get 17pmg mixed use on lpg

Bouncing speedo will be due to the square in the grease cap being worn

boundcing needle is usually the speedo cable , but as above check the hole in the grease cap

if the reading is 10 mph out( i think it was set at 4/6 out at the factory) then in theory the tripmeter will be out slightly.

correct front wheels? 805 printed on the face of the speedo( standard 2wd speedo id)?

Cruz - thanks. Makes me feel that the van is running average consumption (mileage did improve once I got the tracking sorted  )

Billy - thanks too - will investigate, but have no reason to think its not standard.....and yep, the wheels are standard 14 all round.

The odometer is a direct drive from the speedo cable via gears. The speedo needle has no physical connection to the the speedo drive it is pulled around by a magnet. In theory the odometer should be accurate and the speedo can be out but the odometers are not that accurate mine only records just under 9 tenths of a mile for each mile on standard 185 tyres.

Bigherb - thanks for the useful explanation.

Gonna see if I can do some GPS / Odometer testing.

If any were square that would account for the poor fuel consumption. :)
