Diff Lock Control Panel - Middle position?

Post by Mickyfin »

In my Syncro, I only have a rear diff lock knob, which Im currently investigating why it don't light up, but I will leave this for another post.

My question is, in the middle position of the control panel I have what looks like the remains of something that was fitted there, but with no knob. What was fitted here from factory? Im guessing its something either fitted from new, or quite possibly some aftermarket type plug, maybe an headphone socket? Not tried to plug anything into it yet, but will pop out and grab a photo to show you what Im talking about.

Thanks in advance.! :ok

It's where the decoupler was fitted on early syncros, and where people retro fit it. No idea what someone has fitted. In yours

It does look a bit like somemone's pulled a choke knob and cable out, doesn't it? A sneaky picture of the gearbox nose will tell all...

Now that is interesting. So what (if this was a cable) would the purpose of it be?

You mention gearbox silverbullet? What would a cable operate there?

I was under the impression a cable was missing when I inspected my rear heater a while back but members here told me there is no cable for the rear heater control.

Ok, googled a little, and come to the understanding that PTO control is Power Take Off?

As Aidan has mentioned elsewhere Finnish syncros had to have a PTO for tax purposes, as all 4x4 there had to be "requisitionable" by the armed forces and a pto was a statutory requirement.
Or something like that :?
Except that the syncro one is inaccessable and useless by all accounts :rofl

Oh right I see, so its not something I should hunt high and low to get fixed should it indeed be a PTO then? I guess Im not missing much, or causing any damage it not being there?

The cable goes back to the front cover of the box, where you'll find a plain(?) stub shaft about 25-30mm diameter poking forwards just behind the propshaft flange on the right hand side. The cable enters the housing on the left hand side. Don't know why they weren't vacuum actuated, maybe there wasn't the space?
If you can't pull the cable it won't engage, it only runs at reduction gear speed anyway.

Yes a power take off. Like Land rovers used to have before they deleted the 3rd gear lever and went all soft around 1873 :rofl
Used for driving mad stuff like Sankey Powered trailers, saw mills etc.
