Hi Jimmy

Your left knee is a good indicator of if the coolant is circulating correctly, if your knee gets hot air from the heater, the water is going round (not that it still might need bleeding though)

When you say it goes into the red, do you then stop the engine, or do you mean it goes into the red and stays there but drives OK ?

Do you mean the temperature guage goes straight to the red or the temperature itself goes straight into the red ? The guage could be mis-reading ... 20-odd year old wiring etc OR you have a major overheating issue

With a 1983 petrol wbxer you have (or at least should have) the early cooling system shown here ...

The temp sender has a single (IIRC red and yellow ?) wire going to it ?

hi there many thanks for the help guys when i start from cold i can drive for 5 mins temp gauge goes to red then i stop bus i look at water tank its is bubbling very hot it still drive thow i stop in case it goes bang no leeks under engine but it will need water top up each time.

hi ya goes too red aafter 5 mins i looked at water tank bubbling there thow no leaks underside.it drives thow but i dont i stoped and waited for long time them toped up water .

Water tank bubbling means it's either

a) boiling (coolant 50/50 with anti-freeze shouldn't boil in a pressurised system) so air in system and needs bleeding correctly.
b) Not really boiling but has combustion gases entering cooling system ... cracked head, failed head gasket (s).

Have the system bled properly as per Brickyard system (it may have an airlock, blocked rad etc etc does the cab heater get warm ?) and if it persists get the coolant tested for exhaust gas residues.
