Whats my best course of action oil consumption...

Post by Pollypoppop »

Ok after travelling to a wedding yesterday and some formula one engineer said he thought the amount of oil consumption did point at piston rings (either that or it was a cheap chat up line)despite low mileage

Just to recap

Turbo Diesel 1.6 , new turbo fitted but still consuming approx 1 litre of oil per 150 - 200 miles. Smokes on start up, clears quickly and drives like a dream. 80,000 miles

Now my option was sell the van which I love but it is doing my head in!!!

Or

Get valve stem seals changed and new piston rings, which i was worried then might have more damage the more we delve into the block.

Or

Bite the bullet put a recon engine block in, any idea of where best place to get one??? Any rough idea on price??

I can't do the work myself so whatever happens the zeros are gonna add up......

What would you do or suggest?????

Drive slower. Worked for me.

Also, I've found using 15w50 oil helps lower consumption.

Probably about the same as yours, give or take a bit. It had a couple of minor leaks, but fixing them didn't make much difference. Cruising at 55/60 rather than thrashing the a*** off it did, though.

Hello,

Did you check the things mentioned in your other post? Could be your pcv system needs sorting. The oil might not be getting into the chamber because of worn valve guides or broken oil rings - the pcv has a valve which can get stuck open or closed. Worth just checking this before condemning the oil rings - a compression test will tell you the health of the top rings. It's a big job to do the rings and bearing shells - I'd want to be certain I'd ruled everything out before resorting to either a recon or rebuild.
