T25 using oil - help help help

Post by Pollypoppop »

I have a T25 turbo diesel.

It was using large quantities of oil, I changed the turbo, which was knackered and this drastically reduced the oil consumption.

It drives like a dream but I am still using about 1 litre of oil per 150 - 200 miles - what is up??

people have said oil return pipe?
Valve stem seals?
Piston rings but really low mileage??

Anyone had a similar problem? This is scrambling my brain - please help

Hi,

Wheres the oil going?, is the end of the exhaust oily and do you have black specs all over the tailgate? or is it blowing out somewhere else, dipstick tube, crank seals etcs.

Was the replacement turbo bought second hand? if so my guess is that its knackered also.

A blocked oil return pipe could increase oil comsumption, stem seals usually cause blue smoke on startup and after idleing, worn rings would cause poor overall running and starting. Probably need more info to help, does the engine smoke on startup and under power, how bad, what colour and does it clear quickly etc.

Cheers.. Phil

Hi Phil thanks for helping

End of the exhaust is carbony when I run my hand on the inside but not sticky, no black specs on the tailgate, no blow out of dipstick, and bone dry no leaks...

I had my turbo reconditioned would it be unusual if they'd not done a good job went to reputable local turbo place. It has improed the overall power big time!!

So now to start up. I always let the glow plugs warm and then turn over whilst pulling the choke out full. Always starts first turn, usually a plume of smoke, sometimes noticable sometimes not, but clears almost immediately. After that over the course of the day nothing maybe a plume that clear immediately??

It doesn't smoke on idling but what I have noticed is if driving at night and for instance going up a hill under full pressure(Steep 2nd gear job) I can see smoke in the headlights from the car behind behind.

Smoke is usually whitey grey colour on start up, wouldn't say blue if blue really pale blue

Turbo is under gaurantee but had news seals etc etc

Thanks a very confused Polly and my local mechanic xx

Hello,

I agree with everything Phil said but I think you might be looking at a piston ring problem even if it is low mileage - if you potter about in diesels you can get carbon deposits which can cause a lot of "blow-by" gasses into the crankcase. This has two bad effects - one is that the PCV (the valve on top of the cam cover) allows a lot of crankcase pressure build-up to flow into the turbo intake - this will often contain a lot of oil. This is totally normal, but with bad crankcase pressure it can be excessive. The other problem this causes is that the blow-by can increase the oil pressure, which is a problem in a T25 for the turbo return as it doesn't have a great pressure differential to begin with - it only has a couple of inches to fall, and it goes back into the sump, under the level of the oil, unlike a car with an upright engine.

In the first instance, if you haven't already, I would disconnect the oil return from the turbo and run a guitar string through it until it gets to the sump to check there's not a blockage- if you can be bothered draining the oil then take it off all together. I would also check the crank seal, gearbox end, is not leaking - check the bellhousing is dry underneath.

You can take the pcv off and just check the amount of blow-by you have at idle - it shouldn't be that much. You should feel some gas escaping in any case as the vacuum pump causes it.

Your smoke under heavy acceleration under load and occasionally when setting off doesn't sound that unusual - mine certainly does it but I have large injectors and an electronic set up with a big VNT turbo so it's whole different setup to yours. Probably better to get the opinion of another JX owner on that!

Oh yes - would be useful to know what oil you're using.

Hi Ewen

I am using 15/40 oil.

I'll follow what you said - how annoying if it was piston rings, it just seems a big pit that I am launching money in to at the moment oh gawd =(

Mind youonce that's done what else cn go majorly wrong.... Don't answer that =)

Thanks
