We had the saem thing hapen to us 2 years ago in France. After a ride on the back of a french recoery truck and a go on a ramp in comershall garage with all the big vw trucks the problem went away for a while. We got back to the UK and went on a trip to the lakes and up to Gretnor green from cornwall. But in the end the box died I had found a replacement (A bargan from Ebay). If i remember it was rings of some kind in the box that was craked or broken. I hope this helps we were lucky to have a spaire. :?

broken 3rd 4th synchrohub failure - this is most common failure unfortuantely, new synchro ,091 311 301 B is £261 from VWHeritage/classicparts now
figure on from £720 for full rebuild and repair with quality parts
cheap Italian synchro hubs crack worse than the original early ones ime

Ok an update on this. I ended up taking it to broad street garage in enderby leicestershire, near my work. I was very worried about how much this would cost, but it turned out to be a linkage on the gear stick. So, 70 quid later i am back on the road and happy as hell. I love my van but a 1k bill was not something i could swallow easily. Thanks for support from this forum, and a big thumbs up to the garage, the only one of 6 i rang that would even look.

You won't thank me for saying this but ..... If I were you I'd get used to the idea of paying out a grand sooner or later, it goes with the territory.
