Engine Earth

Post by chriscburgess »

Can someone please tell me where the engine earth strap is?

I know about the gearbox to chassis braided earth but isn't there an engine earth strap as well?

Also the thin red wire to the solenoid on the starter - where does that go to on the other end(not the solenoid end),

1, There isn't one, that's why the gear box earth is important

2, it goes to the ignition switch

Erm - I have a strap going from the engine block to the bodywork on my 2.1 petrol (as well as the gearbox one)

Oh! thought I read somewhere on here about an engine earth as well as gearbox earth. That's a bugger then cos i have cleaned up all the earths and changed the oilite bush and got a new battery and the starter is still sluggish. The engine earth was my last resort before taking the starter off to get someone to look at it.

I have also got a braided earth strap between the body (under the coil) to the left side of the engine.
This isn't particularly heavy and wouldn't carry starter current on it's own but in combination with the gearbox strap obviously works.

As a note* you can always add extra earthing. If you suspect a poor earth or cannot shift an existing earth point (badly corroded) you don't necessarily need to remove the original.

Did you check the earth from the battery where it is attached to the chassis?
If not try taking the bolt out and clean the threads.

No, my 1.9 never had one either....

It might be because the 2.1 petrol injection control stuff like ISU and the air flow meter adjust mixture etc by varying small voltages and a good earth as a reference is important. My engine used to occassionally suddenly increase revs dramatically and 'flood' itself - all went away when I cleaned this earth and the gear box earth :D

Yup done that too!

Will add an extra strap to the engine and see if that helps.
Cheers folks
