I know it's probably a bit dark out here now but will the resistor be attached to the chasis or just hanging on a wire, all i can see in here is a small plastic block[1"] with wires attached with spade connectors.

Mine is attached to the body just below the headlight and is cylindrical and about 3-4 inches long, though mines is a 1990 model.

the resistor is a hollow tube , a spring clip screws to the body and has prongs which spring into each end of the tube.

i give up, i've had both lights out, had a good look and feel around, dropped the spare wheel and shone a torch up- nothing.

If there are 3 wires to the radiator fan I dont think you will have a balast resistor for it.

Cheers mate, i think your're right, i have looked everywhere for it. Which brings me back to my original problem of the fan blowing the fuse[8 amp] when i test it with a paper clip on the switch pins. It doesn't blow a 16 amp fuse but only works on one speed[ high speed] which makes me think the fan is faulty. I did the test to find a short circuit as recommended in the Haynes manual which points to an internal fault with the fan motor. I'll buy one and take it from there i think.
