Our first wild camp on Mull

Post by millycat »

Had a really sucessful first wild camping trip to Calgary Bay.

After a year when it was beginning to feel like whenever I set foot in the van something else went wrong, this just made it all worthwhile :D

Fabulous! One of my favourite holidays was in the West of Scotland (Mull, Iona, Skye), it's such a beautiful location. How long were you there?

Hi Silky

We were only there for 3 nights sadly.

First night we stayed at a campsite in Craignure next to the ferry terminal, second night was at the lovely Calgary and third night we stayed with the in-laws who had hired a cottage near Salen. They came to visit us when we were at Calgary and were most surprised that we'd managed to negotiate all the single-track roads in the van. Nae bother!

Fantastic stuff. :ok

Mull is my favourite place on earth :D

The site at Craignure is a cracking little place to stop for a night or two and the pub across the way serves wonderful food and nice beer, though I did once wild camp at LochSpelve, not that far from Strathcoil which was a hoot due to an unexpected rain storm and high winds   which resulted in a bit of jiggery pokery to get the bus of the time back onto terra firma.

This was my berth at Craignure:

Due to relocating south from Glasgow, I can't get to the islands much now and that is not good for the soul

Well done!! The roads would concern me too - we went up there in a newish car rather than a 26 year old van, and even then there were some "challenging" parts. Oh and a few Aberdeen Angus who decided to sit in the middle of the single track roads too, just for sheer devilment :D I'm definitely tempted to give it a go next year though, a couple of us are thinking of heading up there in the May half term week, hopefully before the midges come into full force.
