Kangarooing on a 1.9 petrol injection

Can anyone out there help us?!! We purchased a 1983 US imported petrol 1.9 petrol Westy around 6 months ago 'Chuckie' . When we drive around 60 - 65 mph we suffer a kangaroo type of stammering that can be driven through. Other than this Chuckie drives like a dream. We have taken Chuckie to a local mechanic who informed us that he had solved this problem only to find that unfortunately this is not the case. Has anyone got any ideas please?

possibly a flat spot on the afm causing drop out in signal to ecu, often happens at the same speed because that was the speed the vehicle mostly driven at, difficult to spot with a digital ohmmeter but more noticeable with a needle type analogue meter
test procedure in Bentley manual for afm, and since you have a vanagon Bentley is worthwhile for you as it covers fully your engine set up which is different to our carb version of the 1.9

I think i probably have the same engine (DH), though mine is an '84 oz import.

agree that the bently manual is a very good investment, as it covers all the injection and ecu stuff that the haynes brushes over. i know that unplugging the afm connector (as i found when i accidently left it unhooked after taking out the air box) creates all sort of 'kangarooing' (at idle) and wont hold itself steady

tape up any air leaks in the intake hoses/joins too!
