Welding repairs??
Hi
After rubbing back some bubbling on the bodywork (all over the place!!) I've discovered that the body had lots of rusty holes filled and painted over. I now plan to cut out the old rusty bits and repair it properly. Not being an expert I wanted to know the best way to do this. I;ve looked at loads of threads on here and seem to be getting information overload! I intend to weld in patches, but after rubbing smooth should I cover with red oxide, vactan or zinc primer before using filler? And is upol easy sand ok?
I would be very grateful for any advice.
Thanks
Ned

Re: Welding repairs??
zinc primer the back of any patches you are putting in and cant get to to paint afterwards.
Filler is best applied over bare metal, it gives a better hold and means if there was any loose/flaking paint it wouldnt come off with the filler.
Most fillers are ok, they are all pretty much the same stuff.

Re: Welding repairs??
Thanks for that.
Do I then apply a primer filler on the filler and then topcoat? Or is it red oxide then topcoat?
Sorry about the basic questions, just want it to lastm
Thanks

If your filler is flat enough you can spray on top. If you have bare metal its best to use an etch primer. That is acid based and eats into the metal to produce a good key for the primer to adhere to. I then use a high build primer and flat it down for a smooth surface. Then top coat when your happy.

Re: Welding repairs??
I use one from a local company called stevens. They do all kind of body bits and bobs. Fillers, fibre glass, primers, sandpapers etc. Can be used neat for high build or thinned down to 1:1. It seems good stuff.
I tried the halfords high build once (I was desperate) never again. It just flaked off.

I normally get it off the interweb. Just shop around a bit. I use the upol zinc primer. You can get it from halfords (here we go again) but with it being upol its quite good stuff. But it is exspensive from them, about £11.50 a tin

Shop around and you will get it cheaper.
How local are you to me?
Jim
