1600 TD Drinking too much oil and smokes

Post by redtwoseater »

Hi folks, I'm getting a bit embarrassed driving my van at the mo.1990, 1600 TD Westy 209km on the clock. Recently had a new head gasket fitted. Its chucking out lots of greyish smoke almost all the time I drive. Plus the oil buzzer is doing overtime. With no real oil slick on my drive, just the odd spots, I'm scratching my head. I worked out that I put 2 and half litres of oil in and only got 62 miles! Buzzer came on, checked the dip stick and yet again almost out of oil.
Going to take it my local garage tomorrow. See what he thinks.
Any thoughts or ideas why its happening would be much appreciated.
Cheers Paul.

says it all to me..
Or changing the gasket didn't cure the problem.
Did it do this before the change?

Obviously a very poorly engine....
Why was the head gasket done, what is the recent history?

From your description you are obviously burning the oil so could be:
Broken piston rings
Blown head gasket..
Cracked head
Blown turbo

Running the engine with the buzzer sounding, even for a few minutes could further damage the engine.

Hi thanks for the replies. The head gasket has gone twice since I have had the van (approx 2 years) The 1st time the water pipe from the engine to radiator came loose and drained the water.Had it skimmed, and was told there was a small crack but nothing to worry about. 2nd time I was told it was a faulty head gasket, and it had gone in an unusual place. Had a good quality gasket put on. Somebody else said it could be the piston rings.
So is it time for a new engine? I noticed on Just Kampers they do a 1.6 Turbo Diesel JX Engine (Without Injection Equipment) Block and Head only for £1380.00. Or does anybody know of anywhere else?
Kind regards Paul.

If you are considering another engine then I would suggest fitting an AAZ 1.9 diesel.
fitting this is a well trodden path and straightforward.. See the alternative engines forum.
This engine can be found in a large array of cars
cheap and readily available

Agree with the others Im afraid - either rings or turbo, but on that milage a 1600 diesel engines about done anyway.

I have a £1400 engine from The Engine Shop fitted by the previous owner in 2007 - including fitting etc it cost him nearly £3k.

God knows why! I wish he had spent the money on something more able to cope with hills!!

AAZ's are thin pickings these days... but there are loads of options - check out threads and wiki!

Re engine suppliesrs try the engine shop eg a turnkey 1600d or td is £999 fropm them - you may have to exchange your engine - but hey what are you gonna do with it!!!

Or look at these guys - re-conned 1.9AAZ £775 exchange, but they will take your 1.6td in exchange - dunno what there rep is, has anyone used them!?

AAZ engines are plentiful you only have to do a bit of research on wikipedia to find out what cars it was applied in.

Oh I see.. My friend found a very cheap Seat for sale in the local paper (spares/repairs) with some issues, but the engine was a good find.
