Can a 1.6 have twin carbs?

Hello,

Possibly a div question, but.....i have recenly got an Aircooled T25. On the log book it is a 1.6 petrol. At the moment the van wont start, however the previous owner assured me it did 5 yrs ago. They also said it had been reconned/changed but didnt know what size engine. It has twin solex carbs. Do you have these on a 1.6, I have done a few searches but can only find 2 litres with the same.

Any advice appreciated,

Look for the engine number ... CT = 1.6, CU = 2 litre

If it's twin carbs then it's a 2l CU engine ....
(be flipping pointless sticking twin carbs on a CT...it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding as it is!)

yes twin carbs can be fitted to a 1.6 , but not an original fit

2.0 is silver aluminium as picture
1.6 Aircooled its steel and black.

also exhaust ports on 2.0 are down wards , 1.6 they are facing front and back of engine!

heatexchangers 2.0 are rectangle cross section , 1.6 is lomst round cross section

IFyour lump is a CT engine.......

There are a few of us on here that have put twin carbs on a CT, I had webber ICT 34's on mine which is the norm twin carb mod these engines get... if you do go down this route then you might also consider putting solid lifters in the engine, an engle cam etc as putting carbs only on won't make a huge difference (not as much as you might think and given the cost of the carbs and setting them up you will be let down buy the performance increase per pound spent!).

** The fan housing Billy linked you off to won't fit correctly as the bolt holes look to be in the wrong place and the ducting outlets have different sizes which is for the CU has as they have the oil cooler below this side, on the CT the oil cooler is mounted on top of the engine block so both ducting outlets are the same size (I think!) **


I had a 2.0L fan housing on my CT and I found that other than it looking nice as its ally it did absolutely nothing to aid cooling/improve performance over the original steel one!



IF your lump is a 2.0L then disregard all my rambling thus far!

Thanks for all your advice. Apologies for late reply, my partner was away and had the camera! I have followed all advice but I am afraid am none the wiser and cant find the engine number. I think I need to remove the tin ware but have injured my shouder so am not allowed to do hardly anything at the mo. Today I took these photos so would be very grateful for any help,

Twin carbs, oil drain plug next to the strainer plate, vertical oil filter.

Looks like a 2 litre engine in my opinion.

yep defo 2 litre type4 motor not 1.6 ct type1 motor

twin carbs as standard . the only option fitted new apart from fuel injection

The van has been sat for 5 years so maybe the apparent oil leak is a good thing and means the seals havent dried out? That, or it means one we can get it started my drive will be like a black river and there was a reason it has been immobile for so long

Thanks again for your replies I am a complete novice as far as mechanics etc go but looks like I had best start trying to learn quick.......and become my mechanics best friend!
