Roof brace

Post by mick the mig »

As a new owner I have hit my head more than once on the roof cross brace of my Devon van. My spies were out at the Brighton breeze and reported back that some of the vans they looked in had the brace removed. Now mine seems to be solidly welded in place. Whats the general opinion about the removel of this brace? :?:

Leave it be, it's there for a reason.

Well I'm a big fella and I fold up ok into a tintop. Never hit my head yet and I manage to cook fine in the back. I just sit down to do it. :D

Those vans were possibly Westfalias, they had no cross member from the factory and a roof structural design different from other T25 panel vans and Caravelles which allows the body to stay rigid without the need for the C post cross member. Cutting that out would mean you need a steel box section frame welding round the apperture otherwise it would be limper than Larry Grayson's handshake, plus the upstairs bed has to rest on something.
