Petrol these days

Post by Ian and Lins »

I am a member of the Vintage Motor Cycle club and they are getting very excercised about the compulsory addition of ethanol to 'normal' petrol. It seems most garages these days sell it. Anyway; it does seem to be causing lots of problems with fuel tanks, lines, filters and carbs. Bits melting and rotting and tanks falling apart.
As our vans are getting on a bit does anyone know if we might be affected? :?
Are we going on anything else?

Most of the problems I've heard of in relation to classic bikes have been with fibreglass tanks, where the resin isn't resistant to ethanol, and thus dissolves into a horrible goop which gets into the fuel lines and carbs and blocks them up.

Obviously that's not going to be an issue on a T25, but I guess there is the possibility of some of the seals in the fuel system not being ethanol resistant. It has been in petrol for a good few years now so I guess if there were issues they might have surfaced.

Anybody there got old BSA s from late 30's to 1950 ? I've got a small old maintenance book that they could have if they want it. I used to have a 1939 and 1940 BSA M20 (single cylinder, side valve, 500cc)
1.6D 2019 VW T-Cross
200hp VW T6
