shes ill again!

Post by boatdog »

had a problem with the engine again, last time it just refused to start and was fixed with a new ignition amp all was well went to shell island 120 miles ran sweet, after 5 days started to come home and it was down on power like it was running heavily on choke, but wasnt if that makes sense, its a 1.9 petrol as i headed off home power briefly returned for about 10 seconds then fell off again, we limped home felt like on 3 cylinders got up to 50 after a lot of coaxing even down hill it didnt want to pull, apart from down on power everything else was normal temps etc, had a look now we are home and found a few possibles, fuel filter a bit dirty, but dont think it is fuel as when on tick over it smells of fuel out the excaust, and fuel economy was bad on the way back using a third more than normal, foot down more trying to get speed up probs caused this? dizzy cap and rotor arm seem a bit burnt but only been on 2 years, also i checked all four spark plugs were sparking but seem to get an orange "fluffy" spark were as im sure i used to get a deep blue spark, what colour spark do you get? any ideas would be welcome guys
dont fix it if its not broke cos after you finish it will be!

forgot to say the orange fluffy spark is at the ing lead so its not been affected by rotor arm/dizzy cap

If you've got petrol out the exhaust I'd say one of the plugs isn't firing. This could be a failing lead or plug amongst other things.

thats what i was thinking, had all plugs out cleaned them checked for spark, i know its different when in cyl with pressure etc but all seem ok pulled plug leads off one by one to see if there was any change but nothing seems all cylinders are running but badly, was wondering about the coil could it be breaking down and producing the orange sparks? just ordered dizzy cap rotor arm and fuel filter, i even had air filter out to see that was ok its a bit of a puzzle i can still drive it but its massivly down on power

Id suggest changing the plugs, not just cleaning to fully eliminate any issues. The core can break down inside.

Also changing coil is a good suggestion, when these fail they can cause all manner of odd problems and really the only waty to rule them out is to replace with new!

A thorough service (new oil, oil/air & fuel filters, plugs, leads, cap & arm) will give you a known point to start from. Coils usually start to fail under load first ... i.e. when being expected to pull up a hill or attain high speeds ... however this is also when fuel filter blockages, blocked carb cone filter or under-achieving fuel pumps show their true colours. Try swapping the coil with a known good one to eliminate that.
