got it started today but it has the worst tappet noise! The book says to bleed them, but i havent had them out. How long will it take by running the engine? Bear in mind all the oil came out on the floor so they are probably totally empty!!

others have commented that it can take 20-30 miles to pump up hydraulic tappets.
assuming they have been set if the rocker gear or heads have been disturbed/removed.

A good half hour drive should do it

No harm will come unless after an hour they are still noisy

Took about 45 mins but now sweet as a nut!!!!! Runs better than ever!!!!
