2nd gear Pops out!

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help or has any ideas about the cause or cure of 2nd gear popping out.

I have a 1.6td with 5 spd box. When I select 2nd gear it goes in fine and stays there when it is under load, but when I lift off the power it pops out of gear. Quiet annoying, cos I can't use the engine to brake when approaching a corner.

Generic answer....
Engine and or gearbox mountings allowing too much movement.
Gear sellector rod adjustment
More serious but bent sellector fork
Even more serious...excessive gear/shaft enfloat.
Issues with sellector detent.

change the oil see what the drain plug says
I'm guessing big head and sludgy stem = worn pinion bearing, shaft moves forward in drive and back on the overrun/in reverse

Reimotim - let me know how you get on - mine does exactly the same thing. I had the linkaged checked and greased - no change. I'm just about to change the gear oil - you never know...

I found dipping the clutch as you take the power off helps but I think a rebuild might be on the cards..

Serves me right for buying it off the garage floor with "It was working fine in the last van" ringing in my ears....

I too have the same problem...gearbox recondition I think is the only answer having just replaced all the gear linkage parts. You may want to contact:

As soon as my engine is back in and working how it should I will be sending my gearbox off to them to fix the 2nd gear problem.
Courier is less than £40 so all in all not that expensive!
