Spare Wheel Retainer Threaded Nut thread stripped

Post by Mickyfin »

Not sure if its the actual welded in nut that is stripped, or the T Piece that holds the spare wheel to the inner wall in my boot, but it only tightens a couple of turns, and won't budge any further, thus leaving the spare wheel to rattle around whilst in transit..

Upon inspecting the thread on the T Piece, it does look a bit cross threaded, but not enough to cause this, but I maybe wrong.

What would your suggestions be? Im guessing I would be best off trying to re-tap the thread in the welded nut? If so, anyone know what size it is please? Also may as well try and tap a new thread on the t-piece too while im ad it, but again, unsure of its size?

Thanks

Ive tried to find those parts on EKTA but cant. It will be a Mertic Thread M12 or so I guess but unless you have used a tap and tap wrench before be very careful how you do it - you only get one shot at it. You dont tap bolts, you 'die' them. Buy yourself a cheap set of Metric tap and dies with the handles as you are bound to need them more than once!
It could be that you have the wrong 'T' piece but if the nut really is stripped then you wont be able to tap it as there will be nothing to tap.

Thanks mate, I will look into a tap & die set then. Im missing the wooden space too that the T Piece goes through, so I think once I get a replacement, it may just take up the slack, and hold the wheel securely. Will update as and when I have managed to resolve this.

Thanks again mate :ok

I found out last week its the same thread as the Seat belt bolts, so maybe you could weld a seat belt mounting plate on if its buggered?
