Post by xpress »

hi there. can't find the location properly and I have a non moving sensor. could someone describe in more detail where the coolant temp gauge sensor is and what colour wires are going into it. is it underneath the van, do I need to crawl under it and can I leave the engine cover on. much thanks.

now its gone to the top of the temperature gauge.

the red light is flashing constantly.

when I turn engine off and its cool the gauge rises to the top and stays there like as far as it will go, then after a minute, flicks into view but still above the top part of the gauge.

Have you connected the two connectors the opposite round to see if that works?

Oh Im sorry, I misunderstood your post when you mentioned you found two wires. I assumed (Mother of all and all that) that you had connected these to their male counterparts. Sorry for any confusion cased.

the problem seems to be that its an early dg engine and the stat housing is not in the same place. what I need is aiden or one of the others that works on these all day to tell me where it is. also haven't uncovered why there is two female spades dangling down in dpmmmt of the left rear wheel. I just checked with the meter there's 12v coming from them so it must be for something.

haynes is usually non descriptive.

either that or I will have to trudge down the road or to a vw garage.

The engine year does not matter the temp sender (for the dash gauge) is attached by a yellow/red wire.

What the blithering heck does this mean
dangling down in dpmmmt of the left rear wheel

^^ good call I'd say (black/grey and black/blue)...

once you've verified you've found the yellow/red wire as Kev says, if you're still having problems there's a few tests documented here which might help....

lol thanks for your help guys i am out in the field at the moment, sw country, yes, i have not had a reverse light for a good while so this would make sense, i thought that it might be unrelated to this temp sensor fault, i am investigating angelo's post regarding module fourty eight, will take it out and see if the peaking sensor changes at all, i am going to see where i can plug this reverse thingy into, does it care whick way round the coloured wires go or is it ok either way, please advise.

where does this reverse light sensor be hiding, is it on the gearbox in this case in front of the diff and wheels etc fairly central, might involve some crawling about under there?

a few posts have unearthed a picture of the early cooling set up from "nicola and tony" so i am going to look at this connector and see if it's earthing ok or if there is any rust there, will file it off with an emery board nail file and smear with some lm grease. i will get to know this engine well i am sure as time goes on.

ps rev that was my bad typing skills on the phone, i whipped the keyboard out now to give you a decent reply and a thank you thank you thank you!!!

pps i hope i didn't put the female spades on wrong on the inlet manifold heating sensor when i thought it was the temp gauge sensor i took them off, haynes says one carries voltage and one resistance, what colour should be on the top and what on the bottom, or does it not matter, just want to check and be sure, also can i check this with a multimeter, i think it's not working great at heating up the element deep in the carb because first starting the old girl is a bit of a pain until she warms up.

ppps i have a slight blow on the left j tube as it comes out of the block, i reparied it with gum for now but this will need repairing.......

975 ohm

with ignition on no engine running.

1

cleaned up contact on yellow red wire.

needle still climbs skyward.

even with wire off sensor needle climbs skyward.

can anyone advise from here.
