Wild camping in Scotland

I found this whilst searching the web.........I know we have laws of trespass in England, and Wales and therefore we are not really allowed to wildcamp, but read on...........................

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code, sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage and approved by the Scottish Parliament in 2004, includes the following advice and definitions concerning 'Wild Camping':

EXTRACT FROM SCOTTISH OUTDOOR ACCESS CODE (PART 5) - WILD CAMPING

Responsible behaviour by the public. Access rights extend to wild camping. This type of camping is lightweight, done in small numbers and only for two or three nights in any one place. You can camp in this way wherever access rights apply but help to avoid causing problems for local people and land managers by not camping in enclosed fields of crops or farm animals and by keeping well away from buildings, roads or historic structures. Take extra care to avoid disturbing deer stalking or grouse shooting. If you wish to camp close to a house or building, seek the owner's permission. Leave no trace by:· taking away all your litter;· removing all traces of your tent pitch and of any open fire (follow the guidance for lighting fires);· not causing any pollution.

Responsible behaviour by land managers. If you are experiencing large numbers of roadside campers or have well-used wild camping areas, you could work with your local authority and with recreational bodies to assist the management of such camping.


Oh, to be able to have those rights..............Oh well, dream on........

There are some areas where you can't, Loch Lomond and loch Tay.
This was due to clowns leaving the place like a TIP!

Fantastic! We wild camped in Scotland many many years ago in a tent without any problems. Why oh why can't the authorities here do what the French do? We've just spent the best part of four weeks in France and only used camp sites for 5 nights. All the rest were spent on aires which cost between nothing and 5 Euros a night. One we found in Bayeux was free - and even had free electricity and water! Of course we spent money whilst we were there. If only the authorities over here embraced wild camping and realised what revenue if could bring in! I'm sure most of us would be prepared to pay a fiver to stay overnight on a car park near a beach - but oh no, let's put up a height barrier! Ah well, as you say - dream on!

if you go up the A82 in the evening past Loch Lomond and up through Glencoe, every layby is like a campsite full of caravans, motorhomes and cars/tents! No-one bothers with them, even the caravans (and transit pickups ) that have not moved for months..

as above^^ i was in a layby near glencoe with a little wooden bridge and a huge waterfall infront of us.loved it.

Spent 8 nights travelling round the eastcoast of scotland then down Loch Ness, Glencoe, Glen Orchy etc.. Only 2 nights on a campsite and the rest were wild. 4 beautiful spots by the beach and 2 nights by the river in Glen Orchy, the scenery was spectacular, people would pay a fortune for the same abroad, we are so lucky in Scotland and intend to make the most of it in my Basilbus.

it is more relaxed once you cross the border but if you leave it as you found it you wont get any hasle so head north and enjoy and find your own wild camping spots
