Advice - new sound system

Post by martymacc »

Hi,

Starting to get to grips with my 1990 T25 purchased earlier this summer, but haven't used it much yet!. Anyway, I am about to start getting a bit of work done, and would like to get a decent sound system installed.
Does anyone have any advice on what sort of system to get installed and any decent stockists of such equipment. I've never bought audio equipment for any vehicle before (never having had a car in my youth, never had the need!) so thought i would reach out to the forum for some advice. I will be getting it installed but would like to understand from those in the know what my options are and how much i can expect to spend.

Many thanks, in advance!
Martin

your options are what ever you can afford :D

go to Halfords and check out the options there, you can even listen to the various head units through various speaker systems
Once you have chosen it, make a note of the model and type information.

go on line and find the cheapest.

I've just done the upgrade.

Head unit:
I wanted iPod control and DAB. There's not many that do both. I chose the current JVC top end model. It's about £200 mail order with a DAB aerial and another £50 for the Bluetooth adaptor if you want that. There's some aspects of the iPod control that aren't to my liking, but generally it does the job. And, for silly factor, you can match the display colour to your van. :)

Front speakers:
I've got Sony XS-F 6936 6x9". They're 'low profile' which means they will fit in the front doors. The good thing about having that kind of welly up front is that's very clear - not fighting through upholstery from the back.

Back... The same, in the board below the R&R. Not so good in that spot I've found. To match the front output at full tilt, they end up clipping. Maybe I'll try some beefier 6x9's there. Or even add an amp.

As parts mail order, all that lot comes to about £300 plus a bit more for cabling.

I could have done it myself, but was being impatient so paid £500 all in.

I'm no expert, and our local Halfords has broken speakers, broken head units, no idea of speaker depths (I.e. Will they actually fit?), so no option to preview like that. I took the advice of a local installer recommended by the local van mechanic. So... See a few specialist suppliers/fitters and see what they say/charge.

Thanks for the tips and advice folks. My bro in law is a dab hand at installing sound systems so won't cost me anything to install the kit, so am hoping to splash out on something decent. Will post an update once i've finished
